W.P.A. Depression-era {Paintings}

I've decided to do a series of large scale paintings based on the W.P.A. FAP program . This program was one of a short-lived series of Depression-era visual-arts initiatives.
The Federal Art Project (FAP) was the visual arts arm of the Great Depression-era New Deal Works Progress Administration. It operated from August 29, 1935, until June 30, 1943. Reputed to have created more than 200,000 separate works,

Within these works I have depicted the labor movement being a collaborative entity driven to create a work that will enlighten the masses. Every ones small effort combined can create a vision of a progressive community based future.

Well well well. I just got home from jury duty and I dodged a lengthy ten week trial. Lucky for me I had severe reservations about the charges. These exact reservations got me off the case. TNT Alien Design {The Mill NY}

I recently finished some concept art for the amazing folks at The Mill Ny. They hit me up to design the dog eating alien that would be featured in a spot for TNT.
"The original look and feel of the alien was inspired by crustaceans and other lesser forms of sea life. Ultimately, the alien had taken on slightly more human characteristics. Some of the references I used for inspiration were the praying mantis, sea crabs and Steve Buscemi."
The most important part of the design was that Monk had to be able to capture and digest a small animal within his body. initually I was going to have him swallow the dog, but ultimately I decided he would grasp the dog within his stomach cavity, where he would then digest the animal."
I ran through a broad gamut of designs before The client landed on "Monk." All the iterations of the characters were named after my favorite jazz musicians.

William and the Hilton's bellhop quickly picked up her lifeless body and drove frantically to the local Spiritualist. Together with the Spiritualist's wife they proceeded to resurrect to the love of William's life...................

Naturally occurring elements
"Certainly this was an accidental explosion, but the lab looks like a bomb went off," said West Palm Beach Fire Department Capt. Eric Hartman, who was on the scene. Apparently in an attempt to impress a fellow female classmate Jimmy Lessmoure toyed with the deadly laws of science.
It has been a little under a year since I have done a new time lapse post. I just recently replaced all my lighting and camera gear and hopefully this will be the beginning of many more to come. I've included some of my inspiration above and also some steps along the way.

Skinny Dip "Painting"

On the very day of Delilah's arranged marriage she threw herself blissfully off the cliff at the reception. Her husband's best man (Samson,the man she truly loved) lept forward and caught her at the very last minute. They briefly embraced feeling their hearts all ah flutter, then both of them returned to their assigned seats never to speak more than a awkward "hello" or an estranged "how have you been" for the rest of their lives. Cake was had by all! and the wedding was considered a mild success regardless of the priest having to much to drink, and the slightly over cooked main course.

Ruler (Copperplate Print)

Cleaning up the studio tonight I found these old prints I made before college was officially over. This limited eddition set of 13 was printed for all the professors I loved over my 3 years at Ringlling, I gave each one of them a single print before I left Florida.
Basically I had one last night in the print studio, so I did a one color print of a student holding his hands out to be punished by a teachers ruler. Hence the name.

Emmett Till was an boy who was murdered in Mississippi at the age of 14 after reportedly flirting with a white woman. Till was from Chicago, Illinois visiting his relatives in the Mississippi Delta region when he spoke to 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant, the married proprietor of a small grocery store. Several nights later, Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother J. W. Milam, arrived at Till's great-uncle's house where they took Till, transported him to a barn, beat him and gouged out one of his eyes, before shooting him through the head and disposing of his body in the Tallahatchie River, weighting it with a 70-pound (32 kg) cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire. His body was discovered and retrieved from the river three days later.

RockBand 3 Opening Cinamatic (Digital Kitchen)

Myself, Rama Allen and Ryan Mckenna Directed the RockBand3 open cinematic last year. This piece plays as the intro to the video game, and worked as a promotional device for the game's release. We shot this over two nights on the streets and rooftops of Dumbo, NY. There was a ton of post work done on this one. Mainly because Dumbo is pretty stark. Check out the behind the scenes (Above) to get a quick glimpse into what went into the production. I had Mad fun working with my boys Rama and Ryan on this one! Big Ups to Digital Kitchen, The Harmonix team and of course the beloved Jon Hassell.

Vanessa and her younger brother (Junior) will never forget the day they went down to the ocean and saw the cold, lifeless bodies of the Moby family floating amongst the shore break. Apparently, four members of the local Moby family had gone out to sea (the previous evening) to take the life of a large magnificent fish. Little is known about what actually happened that faithful night, but to this day Junior and Vanessa are deathly afraid of all aspects of aquatic life.

After a entire day of sitting in front of a glowing computer box, I decided I needed to do some trad work on a support with some actual tooth. Ironically after laying these colors in, I ended up doing some color tweaks in the (all to famous) shop of photos. Regardless, this is a quick attempt to capture some of the recession shock that I saw on my walk home tonight. I passed a long line of applicants for a Gap store in SoHo. These are some of the faces I saw when they closed the application process for the night.

Above is a study I'm working on for a small series of drawings. The idea is to have children under the age of 12 color the products based purely on the brand knowledge they have absorbed in their lifetimes. This project stemmed from the idea that we identify with brands based on color, shape, and form more often then we actually associate our selves with legible content.

"Winter Wonderland" Originally written in 1934 by Felix Bernard. Well well well, Yup we did it! We actually recorded a holiday song for the Sessions club. And we had a blast! My cousin Kent turned me on to the tune while I was playing a show with him in Ohio a couple weeks ago. I think you will dig the twist we put on this old number. it was Hella fun! Hope everyone has a amazing holiday and a even better new year!

Church Series Volume 1
While I was in Detroit I completed two drawings of local churches (Above.) One of my favorite artist Allen E. Cober (R.I.P.) did a long series of drawings of the interiors of churches. In ode to Allen I will be doing a series of church drawings over the coming months. Above I have also attached a few of Allen's works. Sadly I could not find a website that displayed his work at a high resolution.

Detroit Transit (Sketchbook)

Just got back home from Detroit. Soooo much fun! Played a ton of music, worked on my script, and I did a slu of drawings. Above is a sketch of the flight from Brooklyn to Detroit. This one will go into a long list of plane sketches that all look almost identical. I want to get together a few other artists and publish a book of these types of drawings. I will add that to my hugely ambitious to-do list. :) I also included a couple pics from the adventure.

While I was waiting for my codeine laced cough syrup at the local Walgreens, I started drawing the (rather boring) check out counter as a shadow slowly crept across my sketchbook. To my surprise a giant had come in to pick up his meds. Shortly after this drawing was completed, he and I (coughing and weezing) climbed to the top of a near by sky scraper and smacked planes around as if they were over sized mechanical mosquitoes. We were not typically violent men. We were just feeling under the weather that day.

I have been cooped up in my Brooklyn studio all weekend long. A evil flu got a hold of my ass and I have been fighting it tooth and nail for the last few days. It turns out becoming a part time hermit has had a few advantages, I got a ton of work done and once all the paying gigs were out the door I turned my old 1970's drafting table into a block printing station. Above is a quick three color print I did to test out my rusty printing skills. It had been a while, and I wanted to see how much I had forgotten. Well the answer was QUITE A BIT! But the beauty of printing is that every mistake ends up taking on a all new unexpected energy. Anyways I have already started another larger printing project so I decided to post this while the first color is drying. Hope everyone had a spectacular holiday. Sincerely: The guy that's full of Vitamin C, Flem, and Echinacea.

I opened this years Print Annual and saw a project I worked on a little over a year ago with designer Brad McNally. I did about 10 illustrations of artists working in different studios around the world. Its always great to get a mention in Print Magazine. Have a great weekend everyone.

"St. James Infirmary" Originally a tune from the early 1900's. This take is a hybrid between a Louis Armstrong version and a Cab Calloway version. I made a few tweaks to the lyrics along the way. All in all had a ton of fun on this one. Hope you enjoy.

Just got back to Brooklyn after the East Coast Tour/ism. I have a slu of sketchbook entries to scan and post, But until then I wanted to post this drawing I did of a mother and son on the plane. I wasn't going to do a sketch, but as soon as the young boy grabbed some previously chewed gum from under the seat and placed it in his mouth I decided I had to sketch out the mothers reaction. She put her magazine down, put her hand out and said repeatedly "Now spit it out.... Spit it out!" Reluctantly the child released the gum. After they both watched Fox news together.........

The bare essentials to my travel needs.
1.) Winsor Newton Travel Water Color set. This is the most amazing invention ever!
2.) (Red) Acid Free Water Color Moleskine (Black) Standard Sketchbook Moleskine.
3.) Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Absolutely love this book.
4.) My old Trusty Mac Book. I have had this since Dallas great for travel. Super small and really light.
5.) Citizen Fish pencil box. Filled with everything from Microns to crayons.

I'm working on finishing p a few drawings from Asheville and Savannah I will have em posted here shortly.

Black Mountain NC (Sketchbook/Photos)

Being in Black mountain with Greg is "Mad Fun!" Its been a perfect mix of making short films, writing music, painting, and working on slu of new designs. After a few busy days we decided to take a little break and climb Look Out Mountain. Unbelievable views! North Carolina might be one of the most beautiful regions in America. Somewhere along the way I did a quick study of this Magnolia plant. Also above are a couple picks from Black Mountain. Heading back to Asheville tomorrow. More post coming shortly.

Well Well well.....Tomorrow marks the first steps of my east coast tour. I will be leaving Brooklyn early early AM style and heading down to Black mountain NC. From there I will be hitting up Asheville NC, Savannah GA. Gainesville FL. And finally resting in the warm embrace of West Palm Beach FL. I have done my best to recreate a Floridian environment in my Brooklyn apartment. Needless to say one of my house plants has taken a turn for the worse. He has become my prime concern. After a few weeks of rehab, it has become clear that his days are numbered. In a last ditch effort I have documented his best dance move and left the rest of his life to chance. There will be plenty of Louis Armstrong in the remainder of his future. Insert sad face here.........

NYC Underground Fight (Sketchbook) Rnd 1

Last Friday I rode my bike into the city for a NYC based underground fight event. I was immediately caught up into the anxiety and fervor that filled the room. I couldn't wait to see the talent get into the ring. As soon as "Shimmy Shimmy ya" hit the sound system the first mildly trained punch was thrown. I quickly realized that the real brawl had nothing to do with what was happening in the ring. The raw intensity of the crowd trumped even the best fighter.

Wild Bears Attack Cruise Line (Sketchbook)

All was calm on the Atlantic ocean as we enjoyed our well deserved vacation cruise upon the Victorian Princess. After a night of champagne and dancing we all went to the upper deck to watch the moon spill into the sky. Once again, like the night before these damn wild bears had attempted to hijack the princess. We did our best to fight them off, but their innate cuteness kept us feeling mildly compassionate. Mildly...........

The other day I purchased a small 3 x 5 inch water color sketchbook. Initially I was going to do a series of water colors around the city. I found that the scale of the book was not very inviting for small details. Instead of abandoning the book I dedicated its pages to exploring a rage of human emotions. Primarily The way the Human condition is expressed within facial features. More to come!

Hello all. I finished this vinyl package design for my friend Joel a few months ago. I just got a few of them in the mail and they look pretty sweet! I created all the graphics using a block print technique.

Upper peninsula (Photo/Sketchbook)

Just got back from the upper peninsula, as soon as I landed back in NY I shaved the beard off, clipped the toe nails, and threw the plaid shirt into the hamper.
Really only did one drawing while I was on vacation. The sketch book above is a local bee farmer. Fun Fact! Did you know that during the hot summer months all the bees will go towards the entrance of a hive and flap there wings all day to keep the honey from melting away.

Amongst the buss loads of school children and swarms of tourists I was doing sketch studies for some larger paintings. Above is one of the drawings of cultural masks I did and also a few reference photos I had taken of the dioramas in the North American gallery. The sad highlight from my visit took place when I was doing a drawing of the infamous Hominid "Lucy" I over heard a father tell his 6 year old son that none of these skelatal exhibits were real, and that evolution is a lie.

Student crisis "Lux zine spread"

Illustration and design for a article about the financial hardships that students are facing after graduation. I only had one night to get this together so I painted the student on frosted mylar and tried some different types of plant life in watercolor. I wanted the student to seem innocent and have the plant life creeping up in the distance. Finally after about 6 attempts one worked. Lux zine July issue.

Here is a set of limited edition Travel books I created for my new storefront (still in beta testing). They were printed with Linoleum blocks and thin transparent printing inks.
This project is an extension on my story about a young woman who kills her adulterous husband after realizing he has been cheating on her for the third time. Above are the many faces of our love entrenched jealous wife.

Here is another time lapse sketch installment for a new original song about a Floridian couple whose marriage has gone south. Still recording the song but the rough outline is that the young woman kills her adulterous husband after realizing he has cheated for the third time. This piece is a painting/scratch board of the local lifeguard at the Palm Beach country club where the murder had taken place. Arther C. Riggins (The Lifeguard) always had a close relationship with the recently deceased.

I have been working with Gouache and vellum to create varied layers of transparency. Its interesting how frosted Mylar mutes/neutralizes certain colors.
